Student experiences

Voices from the school.

Students describe authentic training, patient instruction, a welcoming community, and the physical and mental benefits they have found through practicing with Master Chen Huixian.

“Master Chen Huixian is a wonderful Tai Chi instructor. She’s a female Kwai Chang Caine (from the show Kung Fu) with a great personality. She teaches authentic Tai Chi, the kind you read about having health, balance, and mental benefits. Chen style is the original form of Tai Chi, and I had the pleasure of traveling to China to visit her village where Tai Chi began. What a treat. Tai Chi has helped me gain strength, balance, and flexibility. It provides me with stress reduction, and I feel like it is my favorite community, with friends who share this common interest.”
Michael Williams
“Master Chen is amazing! She has a depth of knowledge that cannot be surpassed. I have spina bifida and walk with crutches but feel at ease in her classes. Master Chen readily provides adaptations for all abilities. I experience better balance, increased stamina, and great satisfaction practicing Chen Taiji. Huixian Chen is an incredibly talented teacher and rare gem!”
Meira Dozier
“Went to her classes years ago! She is so patient and definitely knows her stuff. Her classes are the main reason I miss living in KC.”

Master Chen Huixian's teaching and energy is the best that I've experienced so far! She is very free with the details and corrections (if you're brave enough to risk the pain and ask for them!) as she will teach you as much as you are able to absorb. Her knowledge is very in-depth and quite accessible. She gives a very invigorating and refreshing take on the Chen Family Taijiquan teachings!

Chen Huixian did not try to take us through the complete form. She asked what we wanted, and the group asked to spend more time on corrections and less time rushing through the choreography. This is not your YMCA taiji where you aren't supposed to break a sweat. When you are put into the correct posture, Chen Huixian will ask, “Leg burning?” Yes, the leg is burning. She will smile and indicate that it is a good thing. The best leg workout I've had in YEARS!!!

It's very gratifying to have one of the original family members here (in Kansas City) because the whole purpose of World Tai Chi Day was to acknowledge this great gift that Chinese culture has given the world in the form of Tai Chi.
